beritagoll.com'The Beginning of Time', 1994Standing screenThree panels, each panel 5'8" x 26"Random-stitch embroidery. Silk thread and watercolor on silk gauze. Based on a silver dye-bleach (Cibachrome) print by Robert Glenn Ketchum.Embroidered by Guan Peiying, and Huang Chunya. The success of this remarkable interpretation of a photograph in the style of Chinese painting rests on the simplification. Much of the fabric is left untouched, yet parts of it have been tinted with color to lend body and tone to the enbroidery. The restraint and refinement of the piece result from the interplay between worked and unworked areas, a device often used in Chinese painting. The people involved in this project believe that this piece epitomizes the new Suzhou embroidery: modern and realistic yet with a strong flavor of traditional art. Each panel took three years to create.$500,000 Unique piece

TREE AND BRANCH IN DEEP SNOW, 199616" X 20"Randon stitch embroidery. Silk thread on silk and synthetic blend.Based on a gelatin silver print by Robert Glenn Ketchum.Embroidered by Ji Shaoping. The black-and-white pieces from the Winters 1970-1980 portfolio are very close to traditional Chinese brush and ink painting, in which simplicity of statement and economy of means are highly valued. The abrupt termination of the trunk and branch, however, are purely photographic. In this piece the enbroideres employed stitches in widely varying sizes to create a sense of depth.
